In that fairy tale time called “Before Kids,” my husband and I spent our weekends checking out new coffeehouses and revisiting our old favorites. Life has slowed down a lot since our little monsters joined us, but our need for caffeine has only increased! We’re so lucky that St. Augustine has some of the best coffee spots in Florida. These are just a few of our local favorites.
4 locations: 24 Cathedral Place, 1835 US Highway 1, 647 A1A Beach Boulevard, 76 Dockside Drive, #104
The Kookaburra, by far, is my favorite coffee shop of St. Augustine. There are four locations to choose from, all serving the most delicious coffee roasted in-house! To check out the beautiful roaster, stop by their roastery location on Dockside Drive. It’s gorgeous! As far as food, you can’t go wrong ordering one of their amazing aussie pies. I’m personally a big fan of the breakfast pies, and my husband and toddler like to split one of their yummy muffins. My family’s favorite location is the 312 shop, since it’s the largest. My toddler loves to walk around and chat with the baristas, who are amazingly friendly. The beachside location has a great outdoor area for little ones to check out, and it’s on the way to the splash park–be sure to stop by on your next visit!
Location: 300 San Marco Avenue
Dos is a great spot in uptown St. Augustine. There’s plenty of seating, including tables, sofas, and comfortable chairs (which happen to be perfect for nursing!). My son loves sitting out front when the weather is nice and watching the cars go by. It’s perfectly located right next to the Scratch Kitchen Food Truck and across the street from Creme de la Cocoa–both are to die for! Personally, I love to get a yogurt bowl with granola and a pour-over when I visit. But don’t stop at coffee. Dos is open in the evenings with live music and wine, as their name suggests. It’s a great place for a casual date night… I can’t recommend it enough!
Location: 1765 Tree Boulevard #5
Hyppo is largely known for their gourmet popsicles, but their coffee game is strong. You can check out all of their locations all over Florida here, but my absolute favorite is the Hyppo Cafe across from Cobblestone Plaza by 312. Not only can you get a yummy cup of coffee, but they’ve also got a full menu of sandwiches, salads, and other treats! If you’re in search of something really special, I recommend a cold brew coffee with just a touch of simple syrup. You can see the huge drip towers they use to brew it (never using heat!) right on the counter top. This location has lots of seating, and tons of art and knickknacks to occupy curious kids! Don’t forget to pick up a popsicle on your way out.
Location: 26 Charlotte Street
It may be small, but Crucial Coffee is a charming coffee shop located in the heart of downtown St. Augustine, just across Castillo Drive from the Castillo de San Marcos. Inside, you can find a variety of arts & crafts from local artists, along with so many different coffees and teas. It’s almost impossible to choose a favorite! My husband’s go-to is the slightly spicy “Jack the Ripper” latte, while I try to switch it up every visit. After grabbing some coffee and locally made pastries, take a seat in the magical outdoor secret garden. It’s the perfect spot to people-watch our many visitors to St. Augustine! We’ve made a practice of taking photos of our family in their huge overhead mirror since our first visit there soon after we got engaged. We need to take another now that we’re a family of four!
All the photos in today’s post are personal snaps from my family’s many trips to these shops. It’s fun to see how much my first son has grown since these were taken. Of course, this list doesn’t include all of the wonderful coffee spots in our awesome city–just my top favorites.
