Want to get away? Do you wish you could go on an adventure but don’t have the money? All you have to do is crack open a book. Reading has always been my way of escaping reality. Through books, I can travel anywhere. In books, I can stay in the present or go back in time or to the future. I can run away to a magical castle where I can cast spells with amazing wizards. Or, I can travel to a place where we are divided into facilities or choose to volunteer as tribute.
I love to read so making a list of summer must-reads was tough! So with the help of my fellow contributors and some good friends, we came up with our favorite must-reads for the summer.
One of my all-time favorite authors is J.D Robb (aka Nora Roberts). Her “In Death” series features NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas, her exotic billionaire husband Roarke and a whole cast of thirty, quirky and highly lethal characters to bring you into a world of murder, romance and humor based among the streets of futuristic New York.
Another author I have recently come to enjoy is Clive Cussler. I had a friend recommended him to me and though I have only had the opportunity to read Pirates, I have to admit it is a real page-turner. Mystery, treasure hunting, and action all rolled into one neat package.
Agatha Christie‘s famous French detective Hercule Poirot has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. I used to love to watch the PBS Masterpiece show but never had the privilege of reading any of her books starring the mustached genius. That is until recently when I read the famous “Murder On The Orient Express.” I loved every word. Every page had me guessing the murderer. I can only imagine the rest of her books would be the same.
First and foremost we may as well start off with everyone’s favorite good old Nicholas Sparks. I mean really how can you go wrong? From Landon and Jamie to Ally and Noah the love he describes in all his books have you falling in love right along with the characters. Then you have “The Lucky One,” “A Bend in the Road,” and “Safe Haven” that blend romance with thrill, action, and mystery. While “Nights in Rodanthe” and “The Wedding” shows you no matter your age love is everywhere. From the moment I opened “A Walk to Remember” when I was 15 I was hooked and I have been obsessed ever since.
I love nothing more than going back in time through the pages of a beautifully written historical romance, and no one does it better then Johanna Lindsey. Her Malory novels are based on a popular, prominent, large and very wealthy family in London. The pages blow by with scenes filled with pirates, carriage rides, voyages on the high seas, kidnapping ghosts, thieves, and gypsies. Every one of these terrific books is filled to the brim with love, action, a family bond and humor.
I have found you can not have a sufficient reading list without the addition of some popular collections.
Harry Potter Series
Take a dive into the realm of the world of Harry Potter and his two best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. You can fly through the air on a Firebolt or a Clean sweep while playing a game of Quidditch. Walk through the enchanted grounds and corridors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Head to Diagon Alley and purchase a wand from the famous Ollivanders or grab a prank or two from Zonkos Joke Shop. Travel to Hogsmeade and enjoy a treat from the Honeydukes or sip a butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks. The possibilities are endless.
Which faction will you be placed in? Are you selfless like Abnegation, as honest as Candor, intelligent like they are in Erudite, peaceful like the Amity or are you brave enough to be placed in Dauntless? Maybe like Beatrice, you are Divergent? Follow along with Beatrice and Tobias (aka Four) as they fight the system that has decided who they will be and what their future entail.
The Hunger Games Series
“May the odds be ever in your favor.” The world is divided into districts. And, each district must send a tribute to compete in the Hunger Games each year to maintain “order.” In this series fight alongside Katniss, Peeta, Haymitch, Gale, and Primrose as they do what they can to destroy District 12.
As I wrap this up, I want to challenge each and every one of you amazing mamas out there to go ahead and pick up a book. I know being a mom is hard. It’s exhausting, and you have very little time for yourself. So take that one hour or even 30 minutes to escape. It could be one of my favorites or one of the many on the list below. It doesn’t matter, just do this for you.
