Last month, I posted about doing something that scares you.
At the time, I was referring to things just slightly out of the comfort zone. At no time did I imagine the challenge to that comfort zone would be dangling upside down from some fabric.
On Saturday morning, I joined some of my fellow St. Augustine Moms Blog contributors at Aerial Athlete, for a bit of bonding and physical activity. I was pretty excited to be trying something new, but also terrified at the thought of making a complete fool of myself.
I can be pretty clumsy and uncoordinated at the best of times.
We were introduced to Laura, whose passion for the silks was absolutely contagious. With a background in dance and martial arts, Laura learned to manipulate fabrics by climbing ropes to build upper body strength. As someone who inevitably found a reason to visit the school nurse on rope-climbing day in PE, I was pretty certain this was not going to end well for me.
Laura guided us through a nice warm up with lots of shoulder rolls and deep stretches. Her instructions for us were clear: watch her demonstrate a skill several times before attempting it.
We selected our knotted silks and Laura showed us the first move. All we had to do was lean back into the knot, press our hands into the fabric, lift our legs and flip ourselves up and over.
I don’t do upside down. No cartwheels, no handstands, no somersaults. It’s just not in my wheelhouse. However, I couldn’t allow myself to fail right out of the gate, so I asked Laura for assistance. She very graciously observed my flailing and advised that I was “fighting it” and needed to “just let go.” Well, apparently, I’m a fighter with raging trust issues, because it took everything I had, and the encouragement of the other ladies, to invert myself.
It was every bit as (un) graceful as you can imagine.
But I did it and there was no turning back. While I worked on flipping myself on my own, Laura demonstrated the progression of the pose.
After we played in this position for a while, it was time for standing poses.
Which was great news, because I can stand like a boss.
As a runner, I have incredibly strong legs, so it was much easier for me to get into the proper positions. Trusting the silks to hold us in place, even without hands was a little more of a struggle. But eventually, I took a deep breath and let go.
We spent the rest of the session perfecting our favorite moves and pushing ourselves as far as we could.
I am going to speak for all of us when I say it was a great time. There is such a feeling of accomplishment when you challenge your limits and achieve new heights. Laura was a patient and knowledgeable teacher, and it was incredible watching the ease with which she climbed the silks and twisted into new holds. I cannot wait to try it again!
