When a friend of mine mentioned that she had a ton of zinc powder and wondered if I wanted to make my own sunblock, the obvious answer was yes! I’ve researched quite a bit about sunscreen/sunblock and the safest options out there. We mostly use this brand because it has worked the best, and uses the zinc oxide I mentioned earlier which seems to be the safest main ingredient in sunblock (per my research).
Making my own sunscreen is less expensive, I know exactly what goes into it, and uses less packaging which is, of course, better for the environment. If you have ever thought about making your own sunscreen (or even if you haven’t), it is super easy and really fun when you make it with your friends! So here’s what you need to host your own sunscreen making party:
- Coconut Oil
- Carrier Oil (examples of carrier oils: jojoba oil, almond oil, apricot oil)
- Shea Butter
- Zinc Oxide
- Vitamin E Oil
- Storage Container for finished product (we used mason jars)
- kitchen scale
- Essential Oil (optional)
- Wine, cheese, and fruit 🙂 for you to enjoy!
There were five of us who collectively brought together the items needed and we each took home a mason jar full of sunscreen. Some of the items were purchased from local stores. Whole Foods carries everything on the list except zinc oxide powder. You can purchase zinc oxide powder on Amazon here. This recipe rubs in smoothly on your skin and has worked great for us. Here is the finished product:
The full recipe can be found at Scratch Mommy. Next on the DIY list… lotion! I would love to hear if anyone out there has a natural body care recipe that they love!
